Kao Yuan University, formerly known as the Private Kao Yuan Junior College of Technology (founded in 1986), is the first E-generation academy located in the Kaohsiung Science Park, Taiwan. Officially approved by the Ministry of Education (referred to as MOE hereafter), the Kao Yuan Junior College of Technology began recruiting students in 1989 and Professor Liaw, Feng-Jeng was its first president.
In 1991, the Kao Yuan Junior College of Technology was renamed Kao Yuan Junior College of Technology and Commerce; the School of Continuing Education was established in 1995.
In 1998, approved by the MOE, the Kao Yuan Junior College of Technology and Commerce, was renamed the Kao Yuan Institute of Technology and recruited students for the two-year college program. In the same year the Junior College and Night School were designated as part of the School of Continuing Education and the four-year college program started recruiting students in 1999.
In August 2000, the School of Continuing Education was under the authority of the College of Continuing Education. The Graduate School of Operation and Management, approved by MOE, was also founded.
The Graduate School of Environmental Polymer Materials was established in 2004.
In 2005 the Kao Yuan Institute of Technology, approved by MOE, was renamed Kao Yuan University.
In the following year the new Graduate schools of Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical and Automation Engineering, Road Technology and Architecture were set up.
In 2007, a number of departments were renamed.? The Department of Automation Engineering became the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering; the Graduate School of Environmental Polymer Materials became the Graduate School of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering; the Graduate School of Road Technology became the Graduate School of Civil Engineering; the Department of Biochemical Engineering was renamed the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering and the Department of Finance became the Department of International Business.
In 2008 the College of Informatics was founded, and the Graduate School of Information Technology and Applications, the Department of Information Technology, the Department of Marketing and Distribution Management, the Department of Electro-Optical Science and Engineering were established.
The Department of Recreation Sports Management was approved by MOE to be established in 2009.? The Graduate School of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering was founded in 2010.
In August 2011, there are plans to launch an integrated diploma program on RC Fastener Industrial Technology (Graduate School).
Department of Fragrance Cosmetics Science and Health Care, Green Environment TRC Diploma Program , Culture Industry and digital integrated Diploma Program, Tourism & Leisure Management.
Two divisions were renamed in 2011, namely: the Advanced Vehicle Division in the Department of Mechanical & Automation Engineering; the Interior Design Division in the Department of Architecture. In both cases the renaming was approved by MOE.
At present, there are four colleges, including: the College of Mechatronic Engineering, the College of Engineering; the College of Business and Management; the College of Informatics.
There are also eight graduate schools, including: Operation and Management; Chemical and Biochemical Engineering; Civil Engineering; Architecture; Information Technology and Applications; Electronic Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical and Automation Engineering.
There are also fifteen departments, including: Electronic Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Mechanical and Automation Engineering; Electro-Optical Science and Engineering; Civil Engineering; Chemical and Biochemical Engineering; Architecture; Business Administration; International Business; Marketing and Distribution Management; Information Management; Information Communication; Information Technology and Application; Applied Foreign Languages; Greenery Science & Technology.
Five diploma programs are offered, namely: RC Fastener Industrial Technology (Graduate School); Department of Fragrance Cosmetics Science and Health Care; Green Environment TRC Diploma Program; Culture Industry and digital integrated Diploma Program, Tourism & Leisure Management, Department of Mechanical & Automation Engineering - Advanced Vehicle Division (rename), and Department of Architecture--Interior design Division (rename) approved by MOE.
Currently, the number of students enrolled at Kao Yuan University is in the region of 8,500.
